More about Reiki energy healing

Have you ever heard about Reiki? The name is growing more and more familiar every day, but quite few actually know what it is really about. Short version: Reiki is a Japanese energy technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. But it’s so much more than that…

Reiki originally comes from Japan and was presented to the public by Mikao Usui Sensei in the mid-1800’s. A few decades later, Chujiro Hayashi Sensei contributed hugely to the rise of Reiki when he opened the first Reiki clinic in Tokyo. He also helped Hawayo Takata Sensei introduce Reiki to the western countries in 1937. If it is clear that the Reiki technique itself was received by Mikao Usui Sensei in Japan, the energy it relies on has existed since the dawn of time. The Japanese term “Rei-ki” reflects that since it is usually translated as “Universal Life Energy”.

What is Reiki?

“Rei-ki” refers to the Life Energy that exists around us, in us, and in anything living. Everyone benefits from Reiki in their own way since we all bathe in it, but the best way to receive Reiki is to get a healing from a practitioner or to become attuned with the help of a Reiki Master. If you have ever had a cat lay down on your stomach or chest, you probably have felt this intense yet peaceful warmth spreading deeply and effortlessly through your body; that is also Reiki energy.

The attunement is the process by which a Reiki master will allow a student to better receive and transmit the Universal Life Energy, both to themselves and others.

Mikao Usui Sensei became attuned to Reiki through many years of serious research, meditation and exercises, which culminated with a 21-days fast on a holy Japanese mountain near Kyoto, when he received the attunement and the Reiki symbols as well as how to use them.

There are traditionally 3 Reiki attunement levels: _ level 1 which allows to heal oneself, others, and anything you can touch. _ level 2 which allows to send Reiki to anything far away or abstract, like a situation, a feeling, an event in the past or in the future… _ level 3 which allows to attune other people and teach them how to practice Reiki.

Reiki is as much a philosophy of life as a healing technique, and many Reiki practitioners talk about “the Reiki way”, because it affects our lives in such a deep fashion.

The 5 Reiki principles are:

  1. Just for today, do not worry.
  2. Just for today, do not anger.
  3. Honour your parents, teachers and elders.
  4. Earn your living honestly.
  5. Show gratitude to everything.

How does it work?

The energy field in and around our physical body can be affected by negative thoughts or feelings, and become heavy and clogged. Reiki heals by flowing through the affected areas and charging them with positive energy, raising the general vibratory level and causing the negative energy to leave the body. Cleansing, straightening and healing the energy pathways, Reiki thus allows the life force to flow in a healthier and more natural way.

Reiki instinctively knows where it is needed and will always work in the most appropriate and effective way, even if it is not always the one the client would expect! The Reiki practitioner acts as a channel which transmits the energy without trying to direct or influence it. It is important not to have specific expectations about the outcome of receiving Reiki; healing will take place but it may happen in unexpected ways.

Energy knows no limits and Reiki works as well from a distance as it works in person. It is also possible to send Reiki to situations or places, as well as animals or plants. As with a healing on someone, Reiki will always influence the situation in the better final outcome even though right there on the spot it may not seem like it. Trust that the Universal Life Energy knows what is best for your life path and personal evolution.

Reiki treatments are not a substitute for medical diagnosis and treatment, and no medical claims are made regarding these treatments. People with serious conditions should consult a doctor first and then consider including energy healing as a complement in a global health care program.

That said, anyone who has ever received a true Reiki treatment can testify that it can be an amazing support in any physical or emotional challenge, and can sometimes solve things in a way that western medicine could not have anticipated.

The international center for Reiki training states:

Reiki has had a positive effect on all forms of illness and negative conditions. This includes minor things like head or stomach aches, bee stings, colds, flu, tension and anxiety as well as serious illness like heart disease, cancer, leukemia, etc. The side effects of regular medical treatments have also been reduced or eliminated. This includes the negative effects of chemotherapy, post-operative pain and depression as well as improving the healing rate and reducing the time needed to stay in the hospital. Reiki always helps and in some cases people have experienced complete healings which have been confirmed by medical tests before and after the Reiki treatments. However, while some have experienced miracles, they cannot be guaranteed. Stress reduction with some improvement in ones physical and psychological condition are what most experience.”

Reiki is also known for having very positive and soothing effects on chronic diseases, insomnia, stress etc. since it encourages the energy, body and mind to be as balanced and fluid as possible.

What happens during a Reiki treatment?

The client remains fully clothed, and is usually lying down on a massage table, even though healings can be performed seated as well.

The Reiki energy flows through the practitioner’s hands to the client. The healer works by gently laying their hands on the client, both in specific places learned during their Reiki training (around the head, on the chest, stomach, feet…), and in places specifically needed by the client.

Most clients report a gentle, deep and relaxing warmth, often accompanied by a feeling of lightness, radiance and profound serenity. Some people drift off to a sort of meditative sleep, while others feel like they are floating over their body, or experience visions, emotions, colours, body sensations…

After a healing, clients usually feel peaceful and optimistic, their bodies and minds at rest. Depending on what kind of issue was treated, some people may experience different kinds of emotions during and after the healing. Always keep in mind that whatever comes up during the next few days, it is always for the best and you will feel much lighter and better afterwards.
